Against the backdrop of an intensifying humanitarian emergency in northern Burkina Faso, HCASSC field teams completed the distribution of 45 tonnes of emergency food packages to 1,200 households across the Sahel, Nord, and Centre-Nord provinces — areas worst affected by a combination of conflict-driven displacement and a second consecutive failed harvest.
Each family received a monthly ration comprising 50 kg of millet, 10 litres of vegetable oil, 5 kg of pulses, and fortified blended flour for children under five showing signs of moderate acute malnutrition. The operation, conducted over eight days, required the coordination of 60 HCASSC volunteers and 12 partner organisations working across insecure terrain.
"Families have been surviving on one meal a day for weeks," reported field coordinator Jean-Baptiste Ouédraogo. "The moment our trucks arrived, there were tears. People had been waiting — some for over a month."
HCASSC is calling on international donors to scale up contributions as the situation deteriorates heading into the dry season. The organisation estimates that at least 3,800 additional households in surrounding communes require immediate food assistance before the end of November.
This operation was made possible through emergency funding from the World Food Programme and private donors who responded to HCASSC's urgent appeal launched in September 2024.
